European tech companies meet Belgian officials ahead of their Presidency of the Council of the EU

The European Tech Alliance (EUTA) convened with Belgian officials on 27th and 28th November 2023 to discuss key priorities as Belgium prepares to assume the Presidency of the Council of the EU from January 2024.

11 EUTA members met with the Belgian Secretary of State for Digitalisation, Mathieu Michel, as well as Jérôme Debrulle, the Director General for Economic Regulation who supervises Belgium’s Digital Policies. The visit was also an opportunity for members to connect with the cabinets of the Ministers of consumer protection and the economy, emphasising the role of digital companies in Europe’s future growth and competitiveness and their commitment to European citizens and values.

The upcoming Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU will be focus on two key areas:

    • January-February 2024: Emphasis on finalising or advancing discussions on key policy files.
    • March-June 2024: Belgium plans to engage with EU Member States to exchange on the future operations and evolution of the European Commission.

As outlined in the EUTA’s forward-looking manifesto for 2030, the EUTA underscored the urgent need to unlock European tech companies. The EUTA called for:

    • An ambitious strategy for European tech and competitiveness.
    • Political commitment to clear, targeted, and risk-based rules.
    • Consistent enforcement for fairer competition.

The EUTA is eager to contribute to the success of Belgium’s Presidency through active participation in numerous engaging events and through continued dialogue.

On the occasion of the visit the EUTA’s Secretary General Victoria de Posson noted:

“We look forward to working with Belgium under their Presidency to unlock European tech companies’ leadership at home and beyond.”

“We need an ambitious EU tech strategy to overcome growth obstacles, a political commitment to clear, targeted and risk-based rules, and consistent enforcement.”
