EUTA engages with European Parliament to strengthen Europe’s tech competitiveness

Brussels, 02 October 2024 – Today, the European Tech Alliance (EUTA) made significant strides in advocating for the growth and competitiveness of Europe’s tech industry. Eleven CEOs from leading EU tech companies met with key Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) from the European People’s Party (EPP), Renew Europe, and the Greens to discuss critical challenges facing the sector.

The discussions focused on three key priorities:

  1. Reducing regulatory burdens
EUTA urged policymakers to streamline regulations, freeing up resources for innovation and growth by minimising the administrative burden on tech companies.

  2. Ensuring consistent enforcement of EU rules
EUTA emphasised the need for all companies operating in the EU, including third-country entities, to adhere to the same regulatory standards, ensuring fair competition across the EU market.

  3. Adopting targeted, risk-based regulations
EUTA advocated for proportionate, risk-based regulations tailored to the diversity of tech business models, warning against one-size-fits-all policies.

The CEOs presented a set of concrete recommendations, highlighting seven actionable steps and four key pitfalls to avoid in fostering a competitive environment for European tech. These recommendations can be accessed here.

Antoine Jouteau, EUTA President and CEO of Adevinta, commented:
“The fever of regulation is becoming a problem. EU tech companies now allocate up to 30% of their roadmap on compliance, diverting valuable resources away from innovation and enhancing the consumer experience.”

Victoria de Posson, EUTA Secretary General, commented:
“European tech companies need time to digest the numerous regulatory layers introduced in recent years. Any future initiatives must be risk-based and carefully tailored to safeguard Europe’s competitiveness.”
