EUTA calls for stronger enforcement of EU e-commerce rules at Council Working Party on Competitiveness and Growth

Brussels, 24 February 2025 – The European Tech Alliance (EUTA), together with Allegro, addressed the Council’s Working Party on Competitiveness and Growth, contributing to discussions on the European Commission’s initiative, “A Comprehensive EU Toolbox for Safe and Sustainable E-Commerce”.

This initiative is a step forward in ensuring fair competition between EU-based companies and non-EU counterparts.

However, the priority must now shift to consistent and effective enforcement of existing rules, rather than adding new layers of regulation.

EUTA’s call to action: Strengthening enforcement
✅ Accelerated enforcement: Procedures must match the speed of digital commerce, with clearer timelines and interim measures.
✅ Targeted enforcement mechanisms: The challenge lies in non-compliant imports. It must be addressed at scale.
✅ A Single Market for Enforcement: Greater alignment within and across Member States is essential for consistency.
✅ Stronger compliance measures: Authorities must be empowered to take decisive action, including measures such as geoblocking non-compliant platforms.
✅ Industry and customs collaboration: Effective enforcement requires technical cooperation to make the Customs Data Hub operational.
✅ A trade and diplomatic response: The EU must be prepared to hold non-EU actors accountable, even when this involves trade or diplomatic challenges.

The bottom line: The EU already has a comprehensive regulatory framework. The priority should not be creating new rules, but ensuring proper enforcement of those already in place. Over-regulation risks creating unnecessary complexity for compliant businesses without addressing the real issue.

EUTA remains committed to working with EU policymakers to ensure a regulatory environment that protects consumers, upholds fair competition, and enables European tech companies to thrive.
