European Tech Alliance hosts exclusive roundtable with policymakers to discuss Europe’s role in the global data economy
The European Tech Alliance hosted an exclusive roundtable as part of the Brussels Tech Summit on 7 June, which was chaired by Luukas Ilves, Deputy Director and Senior Fellow at The Lisbon Council. The roundtable provided an opportunity for members and representatives from the three EU institutions to meet and discuss Europe’s place in the global data economy.
Generally, participants agreed that Europe has growing strength in the field of technology, highlighting the success of the European Tech Alliance’s members as a clear example of the achievements of European tech companies globally. With a joint desire to continue to develop Europe’s potential in tech, members and policymakers alike engaged in a clear and frank discussion, under the Chatham House rule, which resulted in consensus that all parties need to work together more to improve the legislative environment in the EU.
In the face of the 2019 elections, members underlined the importance of focusing on what businesses and policymakers can build together, and also highlighted the importance of cohesion between policies adopted under the Digital Single Market strategy in ensuring that the European market can remain globally competitive and is not overly complicated for smaller businesses to navigate.
The event was a definite success in facilitating engagement between European tech companies and EU policymakers. The European Tech Alliance plans to develop these discussions and continue to build on these relationships, focusing on specific issues at the forefront of the EU digital agenda.
