European Tech Companies encouraged by efforts to develop a European approach to Artificial Intelligence

In March 2019, the European Commission’s High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence (AI HLEG) is due to deliver its ethical guidelines for the development of trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI). The European Tech Alliance welcomes the initiative and the work of the AI HLEG to create an ethical framework for a future which is set to be greatly influenced by AI.

We believe that these ethical guidelines can act as a key starting point for a future built upon ‘human-centric AI’. However, we urge the European Commission and Member States to avoid over-regulation which could place unnecessary hurdles in the path of a flourishing European AI industry.

Currently, EU investment into the development of AI severely trails the vast sums that are spent by other global players, such as the U.S. and China. This requires addressing. Moreover, a strong ethical framework must guarantee that European companies are provided with equal opportunities to flourish. We must ensure that European companies are able to compete at the forefront of AI development in order to guarantee a future in which AI systems respect European ethical standards.

To ensure that the EU remains a key player in the future of AI, more effective training and cooperation between academia and business is key. This means allocating the necessary resources so that revolutionary research and development can be achieved in Europe and talented AI developers recognise that they can build their careers within the European Union and shape the AI ecosystem.

The European Tech Alliance mission is to act as a pool of expertise that the European institutions and national governments can tap into so that any legislation that they look to introduce will nurture the European tech sector and enable us to compete on a global level. Please do not hesitate to reach out for further details on how our Member companies use AI.
